Tangier Travel Guide: Day Trips, Driving Tips and Local Advice
Tangier is a city of viewpoints, markets and sea. This Tangier travel guide explains how to get around, how to drive safely, and which day trips are worth the road.

Your Tangier Travel Guide at a Glance
Tangier stands on the Strait of Gibraltar, facing Spain across a narrow stretch of water. Its old Medina and Kasbah, the Grand Socco square and the long seafront Corniche make it easy to love, and its position makes it the natural starting point for trips along the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts and into the Rif mountains.

Day Trips From Tangier by Car
Each guide has distances, timings, ideas and the best car for the trip.
How to Get Around Tangier
Inside the city, petit taxis are cheap and plentiful, and the centre is walkable. The Medina is a maze of lanes where cars do not go, so you park outside and explore on foot. For everything beyond the city, a rental car gives you speed and freedom: the coast roads, the Rif mountains and small villages are hard to reach any other way. Trains also run from Tangier to Rabat and Casablanca on the high-speed Al Boraq line, but they do not take you to the beaches and viewpoints.
Driving in and Around Tangier
- Traffic drives on the right.
- Speed limits are normally 60 km/h in towns, 100 km/h outside built-up areas and 120 km/h on motorways. See the overview of speed limits in Morocco.
- Fixed and mobile speed cameras are common, and even a small excess can bring a fine.
- Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers, and handheld phones are not allowed.
- Motorways such as the one towards Rabat are fast and well maintained, with tolls.
- Parking in the centre is busy: a compact car is a real advantage.
When to Visit Tangier
Spring and autumn offer mild weather, quieter roads and the best light for photos. Summer is the busiest season, with many families arriving through the airport and the ferry ports, so book your car early. Winter is greener and quieter, though the Atlantic coast can be windy.
