Cap Spartel by Car: A Half-Day From Tangier to the Caves of Hercules
Just west of the city, Africa’s northwestern tip meets the ocean. This guide shows how to reach Cap Spartel by car, together with the Caves of Hercules, and how to enjoy both in a relaxed half day.

Why Visit Cap Spartel by Car, and the Caves of Hercules
Cap Spartel lies about 12 km west of Tangier and marks the northwestern point of the African continent. Its lighthouse, built by Sultan Muhammad IV in 1864, stands where the Mediterranean and the Atlantic meet. The site has been renovated in recent years and now includes a museum, a restaurant and a botanical garden, with access to the top of the lighthouse for views of the Strait of Gibraltar.
Below the cape, about 14 km from the city, the Caves of Hercules open to the sea through an arch said to look like the map of Africa. They are part natural and part man-made and show traces of occupation going back thousands of years. Read more on Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules on Wikipedia.

Best Time for Cap Spartel by Car
Cap Spartel by car works all year, but the light is best early in the morning and in the hour before sunset, when the lighthouse and the ocean turn golden. Spring and autumn are ideal: the air is clear, the car parks are calm and the Strait of Gibraltar is easy to see. In July and August, arrive before 10 a.m. or after 5 p.m. to avoid the busiest hours, and bring water and sun protection. On windy days the cape can feel much cooler than the city, so pack a light jacket.
Eat, Rest and Continue
Small restaurants near the cape serve grilled fish and tagines with a view. Afterwards you can return along the same coast road or continue to the beaches west of Tangier before the sun goes down.
