Car rental Tangier requirements: the 6 documents you need
| Document or condition | What to know |
|---|---|
| Valid driving licence | Held for at least one year, with a photo, in Latin letters. |
| Passport or national ID | The name must match the licence and the booking. |
| Minimum age | Usually 21; many premium cars require 25. |
| Security deposit | Cash or card, refunded when the car returns undamaged. |
| Phone number | A working number (WhatsApp is ideal) for the handover and for emergencies. |
| Booking details | Dates, pick-up place and, for airport pick-up, your flight number. |
If you want to rent a car in Morocco for a family member who will also drive, bring their documents too: an additional driver must be registered on the contract, otherwise the insurance may not cover them.

Can you rent a car in Morocco with a foreign driving licence?
Yes. Visitors can normally drive in Morocco with a valid national licence for up to one year after entering the country, as long as it is written in Latin letters and carries a photo. If your licence uses another script, such as Arabic or Cyrillic, carry an official translation or an international driving permit.
An international driving permit never replaces your national licence: it only translates it. Carry both documents together. Many agencies do not insist on the permit for European, British or American licences, but it removes any doubt at a police checkpoint.
Car rental deposit in Morocco: how it works
The car rental deposit in Morocco is a guarantee, not a fee. The agency holds a fixed amount in case of damage, fines or a missing fuel level, and releases it when you return the car. Amounts depend on the category: a small car needs far less than a premium SUV.
- Cash or card. Local agencies often accept cash; international brands usually require a credit card in the driver’s name.
- Written amount. Your quote and your contract state the deposit. Keep the receipt.
- Refund. The deposit is returned after the final inspection. Photograph the car at pick-up and at return to avoid disputes.
Insurance when you rent a car in Tangier
Basic third-party liability is compulsory and included in the price. Damage to the rental car is normally covered with an excess (called a “franchise”): you pay the first part of any damage and the insurance pays the rest. A zero-excess option removes that risk for a daily fee.
- Check the exclusions. Tyres, glass, the underbody, the interior and lost keys are often excluded from basic cover.
- Ask about your credit card. Some cards cover rental damage; confirm the terms before declining extra cover.
- Add every driver. Unregistered drivers are not insured.

What to check before you leave the car park
- Walk around the car and photograph every scratch, dent and the dashboard (fuel and mileage).
- Check the spare wheel, jack and warning triangle. They are mandatory equipment.
- Confirm the fuel policy and whether the car runs on diesel or petrol.
- Read the mileage and border rules. Rental cars normally cannot leave Morocco.
- Save the emergency numbers: 19 for the police in towns, 177 for the Royal Gendarmerie outside towns and 15 for ambulance.
- Keep all papers in the car: rental contract, insurance certificate and your licence.
If you have an accident, do not move the car before the police arrive, and fill in a joint accident report (“constat amiable”) with the other driver. Call the agency immediately.
